What was the punchline? Crimson wondered this everyday. He wondered what the joke was, what the humor was, when the big laugh was coming... because no matter how he looked at it, no matter how he rearranged his thoughts it just did not make sense. How could he be this lucky, how could fate have chosen to bestow this... happiness to him... had it not been paying attention to what he had done? Had it ignored how much blood had been pored on the floor? Had it no clue how many graves were full due to him? It was not guilt he was feeling but bewilderment. Guilt was not an option for a monster only for a man.
He looked down at his source of confusion. He blond hair almost glowed in the sunlight, her ears flicked with happiness as a wordless sweet song sounded from her lips as she hummed. Her eyes were closed in happiness as her pink tongue darted forward and flicked across her ice cream cone, her entire being radiating contentment. He ponder her. She had no guile, no second purpose, no manipulation in her being what so ever... it was like she could not comprehend such things within her tiny frame. She was a complete innocent in so many ways, the closest thing to a true and pure being... So he had to wonder... what she saw in him, why her attachment to a beast who had long away done away with any pain that came from being a man.
Her eats flickered for a moment as she looked at him and smiled, it was a smile just for him, just because he was looking, just because he had chosen to spend the day with him... just because he was him. It made no sense but felt so right. He knew he wasn't any good for her, hell he probably put her more in danger just by standing near her but the thought of telling her good-bye, of walking away, of hurting her for the slightest of moments... it hurt him, it hurt him more then anything that was done to him, more then the gene surgery, more then the nerve adjustments, more then the nanites when they were inject... more then anything he had ever experienced. It made him feel... bad... and that was something he didn't feel ofter, something he didn't wanna feel and thus she stayed with him.
Oh he had tried to fight it, he had tried to limit his interaction with her, tried to stay away but... she found him, looked for him, cried when she could not find him... it wasn't fair. It just wasn't fair. He had done nothing to deserve this, he had done nothing... good enough to deserve this brightness but yet the sun had come and it shone so bright it hurt, it exposed his darkness and yet did not care. She knew what he was, he had told her enough, she had seen it enough but... she didn't care. It didn't matter... unlike his sister who seemed excited by what he was Aaya looked at him and never saw a monster... he didn't know what she saw... well he did. He found one of the crayon sketches, him with a scythe in one hand, holding her close to him with the other arm and him wearing... some sort of bright red armor. Like some sort of hero...
He shook his head and starting walking away, a slow measured pace that with a few quick steps she was able to get next to him and effortlessly keep up with ice cream still in hand. With a murr of contentment she leaned against him and rubbed the top of her head against his armpit. With practiced ease he lifted his arm up so she could get even closer to him and the lowered it so his hand was draped on her opposite shoulder. She murred again and continued enjoyment of the frozen treat. He felt an easy crooked grin come to his face as he analyzed how he was feeling...
Content... it was different then the others. It wasn't the primal joy, much to calm and gentle, wasn't the soothing calm, the feeling inside him were not settled. It was less like a pool of liquid metal and more like a boiling pot of water as tiny feelings came to the surface... and in no way shape or form was it the horrible rage. For that matter when he was merely in the same room as Aaya the rage deep within him... settled. It curled up in a ball and mostly slept. Granted it slept with one eye open ready to unleash it's full point blank devastation on anyone that threatened her... but it actually slept. Slept soundly and peacefully... the downside was as soon as she was out of view the rage came back, it burned hotter, it wanted to know where she was, who she was with, when she would back and why he wasn't with her at the very moment of time. It was very unreasonable.
But it was all worth it, it was worth the trouble, the confusion, the inability to stay in one place long just for moments like this, for her to be beside him, for her to walk along a mall with him smiling, laughing, he didn't struggle as she squeeled happily, grabbed his hand and pulled him to the display window of a pet store to look at sea kittens as the swam lazy circles in their pool. One looked up at her and gave a low rumble of a mew and she covered her mouth with her ice cream as she giggled happily. Crimson knew...there was nothing that he would not do for her, no atrocity he would not commit to keep her safe. If he had to burn a thousand inhabited worlds to cinder just to warn off those pursuing her then so be it. He would carry those sins without a frown just as long as she kept smiling.
