Setting information:
Current area:
You see before you a huge dessert stretching out for many hundreds of miles it is a hot dusty day. the sun is scorching hot during the day, and freezing cold at night. Water is a valued commodity out in the dessert before you, though it is valued highly almost every where. The winds howl and bristle your skin causing much discomfort to the point of danger in the right conditions.
There are several communities who have made large and thriving settlements on the border lands of the dessert. Beneath their elegant and beautiful sight these cities are dangerous, there are thieves and murders everywhere. Beyond lies many hidden ruins holding great secrets, wealth and much more if you can survive the desserts.
There is not just dessert but forests, volcanoes, and many other types of terrain all ruled by different royal kingdoms. This is truly a place full of adventure waiting to unfold for these travelers.
----------------------------------------------------
Armand sat among some creates in a temporarily abandoned alley way counting through what he had been able to smuggle/liberate/and take from the local nobles. He kept a sharp ear out for approaching guards or worse the competition. He had thrown off the heavy hood that normally obscured his face and body, his face was most certainly not human. It was a serpent like face with front facing horns.
His scales were pitch black in the alley way making it hard for even the most alert guard to see him. His hands sorted through the gold with practiced ease as each item was examined.
The sunlight and clothing failed to show anything else about his features, as it was approaching twilight hours. The sky was now a dark purple with red highlights, lamp-lighters were now making their way along the main streets igniting the lights for the cold evening hours.
There was a small pile of silver coins that he had been able to pinch from a few people whom he had bumped into or been close to. The second was a deck of playing cards he had managed to pinch from a gambler who had been trying to set up a table next to his. A cup filled with a few dozen coppers, with a small bead inside of the cup.
Last was a map case he had won, from a treasure hunter or so he claimed to be. The man had run into some bother and was gambling his map away in a last ditch effort to earn some money.
A young treasure hunter had tried to pawn it but none of the sellers had wanted such a useless scrap of paper. The dealers in the dice dens thought he was a joke and threw him out, the poor guy had been so down that Armand had been unable to help himself and agreed to a game with the young man. He played a game he liked to called "dragon's dice" with the treasure hunter.
Dragon's dice was a game he created based on numbers, the goal was to get to 24 or close to 24 using dice that were rolled. Each player is given 4 dice and rolls them, then they add dice based on how close they are. Each dice is rolled and your stuck with that number, if your over 24 you bust and loose the game.
Armand couldn't bring himself to cheat the young man out of his last hope, so he didn't use magic. It hadn't helped he won thanks to sheer dumb luck, and because the poor guy hadn't understood the rules and kept calling for new dice before busting. Armand handed the young man the 10 gold he had liberated from the nobles and told him to get his life straitened out and to not treasure hunt again.
The treasure had broken down in tears at this generosity and left thanking the gods for his generosity. Though embarrassed and completely believing he had done the right thing, he regretted it partly as he now looked through the meager pickings that had survived after that game. Sure he had enough for some food and maybe some drink, he didn't have any place to sleep which meant sewers, streets, or abandoned buildings if he was lucky. The man had said something about the map leading to some treasure out in the dessert worth more than a kings bounty.
He snorted angrily at himself, in frustration "Probably some superstitious abandoned ruin full of god knows what." he growled aloud looking over the map case for a moment before he turned his attention to more pressing issues.
"you seem in a fine Fettle." A male voice said in his head. He could never get used to the sensation of having someone inside of his head.
"Shut up." Armand growled aloud.
"What have you got to be prissy about?"
"Kess....shut up."
There was a hissing laughter coming from above him A small butterfly winged dragon, that was long and bright yellow with some green mixed in with it was hovering behind him. The tail ended in a curved stinger like a scorpions sting the wings flapping easily through the air."What you have a heart. No need to go all heartless on me. Granted the take is rather pathetic thanks to that bit of charity."
"Here we go."
"What i'm just saying it's pathetic compared to normal."
"Yeah and then your going to gripe how i spend your hoard irresponsibly."
"Me say that how could you I'm hurt." The small dragon said with a grimace. Though there was the obvious hint of scathing sarcasm in the thought.
Armand sighed and looked down. "I'm not happy about this believe me, i feel like an idiot but the guy was robbed by his own group what was i supposed to do. I'm not about to steal from someone like that."
"yeah but you didn't have give away almost all the money either."
"And you are heartless some times."
"I suppose your right, but whats done is done." The dragon said in its arrogant tone of voice though it was smiling slightly to itself out of respect for his friend.
"Besides there wouldn't have been enough to go to an inn anyways with the take after giving him half, might as well have given him the whole thing where he can put it to good use......"
"You hope. Right."
"Shut up, stop dooing that.."
"doing what."
"Reading my thoughts."
"why"
"Do you really want me to answer?"
"No i get it." The dragon replied in a happy smug tone already knowing why his master/friend didn't like his mind reading ability. "So whats the plan."
"find the treasure of course."
"I meant besides that. I'm not exactly sure but neither one of us has survived out in the dessert or even left the city for that mater." The dragon said his thoughts dribbling irritation and sarcasm.
"keep being a smart ass and i'll flick you into the wall."
"Don't you mean or?" The dragon said smugly as a hand came backwards swiping at the strange psuedo-dragon creature above him. "Hey. that wasn't very nice."
The draconian ignored his familiar and began gathering up his stuff stuffing it into his backpack, and into a belt of pouches underneath his heavy cloak. "Would you do something useful and see if you can find a for us to stay or maybe eat."
"Why....." The dragon rolled its eyes and sighed as he got the surface thoughts very clearly. "I know you want me to stop annoying you. Fine i'll do as you ask. Though you really should use that stupid bag more often."
"I hate those rations." He growled proudly as he throw the hood over his face covering his body again he left the alleyway behind him. He made a face at the idea of that magical bag he had found among his masters possessions. It produced magical rations good for one person/creature for each day. It was usually a piece of dried bread, that was tasteless, he couldn't tell what type of bread as it had oats, fruit, random items in the dough. The bread was almost always dried and crumbly. If there was one thing he had learned about that bag is magic can make food, but it doesn't necessarily do it right.
He may not like the rations but kids and beggars were more than willing to eat old tasteless bits of bread. So he had some use for the bag, and he would eat from it when needed it was just preferable to not have to eat stale shapeless, tasteless bread every day.
He didn't turn to look to see if he had been over heard or watched. Two figures snickered and dissipated into the shadows along the alley way with large grins on their faces.
After a few hours wandering 'Armand' as he had become known in the city, came to a cheap in called Nights calling. It was a rough bar in the basement of a bakery, an was only opened at night. It was a den for thieves and cutthroats, or so the local guards and businesses would say.
It might have a rough atmosphere but the establishment wasn't bad, it was cheap and you didn't have to worry too much about getting food poisoning. Armand entered and kept his face covered, he went to a private corner after waving idly to the bouncer. He was a big half-orc with feirce teeth and a greenish olive skin. He had thick chain mail armor and leather pading on but ignored armand.
Kess flew behind Armand looking the place over, there were alot of rough looking people who were frequenting the bar most of them looked like the were rich, or likely to stab you, most likely both. Armand sighed and found a table in the back, he ordered loaf; of nut bread, some roast goat, and a bottle of Nut-brown ale.
"Why do you insist on frequenting these cheap dives, where it looks like everybody wants to kill each other?" Kess said irritable as he looked around at everybody.
"Well its this or go spend hundreds on fancy restaurants and bars. With prissy nobles that are rich spoiled and greedy." He replied in a scathing voice, he didn't like rich and he most certainly didn't want to be around them.
"i suppose but still...."
He dug into the bread hungrily ignoring his familiar as he tore into the soft loaf of nut bread. Kess looked around the bar as he sat there looking around at all the patrons. He had to sit at the table because apparently there was a rule against familiars staying on their owners shoulders something about cheating at cards.
"I think we've got company......and they don't seem very nice"
"oi...mind if i take a seat mate." A man asked as he didn't wait for the answer but sat down. "Thanks." There were six menacingly big, thuggish men standing behind this person.
"i thought you were only taking A seat. Not six." he said calmly still tearing into the bread.
" My boy's won't be sitting." He said looking over the the covered humanoid in front of him unable to see anything of his features. "now i heard from a little birdy that you got a map, and we are interested treasure hunters. Why don't you let us tag along?"
"So you can stabb me in the back when i find it right?" He said calmly not afraid.
"Now wh'at ever gave ya that idea?"
"Well there's six of you armed to the teeth standing in front me with obvious killer intent. And think a few of them need a bath or something."
"look mate jus' give me the map and things will be easy for ya."
"No...i don't think so."
"Ohh you'll give us that map." He said spilling over all the food and drink, onto the ground flipping the wood table, this sent kesslan into the air hissing. All of them drawing their blades, at the seemingly unarmed and obviously outmatched person in a cloak.
